How the spacing stays accurate on paper

The generator works entirely in points internally (72 points per inch), the same unit PDF files use natively. That means the grid you see on screen is built from the same numbers that get written into the PDF — nothing is rescaled or approximated between preview and print. As long as your printer is set to "Actual size" or "100%" (not "Fit to page"), the spacing you chose will measure correctly with a ruler.

Which spacing works best for each use

Engineering and drafting. A 1/4 inch (0.25 in) or 5 mm square grid is the general-purpose standard for hand sketches, quick schematics, and bill-of-materials tables. Drop to 1/8 inch or 2 mm when you need finer resolution — plotting a curve, laying out a small PCB footprint, or scaling a drawing where each square represents a fixed real-world unit. Turn on "Heavier line every N" so every fourth or fifth line prints bolder; on a dense engineering grid that single setting makes it much faster to count squares at a glance instead of tracing individual lines with your finger.

Math homework. Most algebra and geometry work is comfortable at 1/4 inch (or 1 cm for metric classrooms) — squares large enough to fit a digit or a short label without crowding, but tight enough that graphed lines and polygons stay proportional. Younger students plotting their first coordinate planes often do better with a slightly larger 1/5 inch or 1 cm grid, since bigger squares are easier to count under a pencil. Switch to 1/8 inch or 5 mm once graphs get denser — trigonometric functions, statistics histograms, or anything with a wide axis range — so more of the curve fits on one page.

Knitting and crochet charts. Stitch charts aren't drawn to a real-world scale, so the grid just needs to be large enough to fill in by hand or with colored pencil and count accurately from a distance. A 5 mm or 1/4 inch square grid works for most colorwork and lace charts; switch to dot grid instead of square grid if you want the stitch symbols to stand out without grid lines competing for attention, since many charting conventions draw the stitch symbol inside an otherwise blank cell.

Drawing and illustration. Loose sketching and thumbnailing benefit from a lighter touch — dot grid or a fine 2 mm square grid gives just enough structure to keep proportions and perspective lines honest without the grid fighting your linework for visual weight. For structured technical illustration or comic panel layout where you need hard perspective and vanishing-point guides, a bolder 1/2 inch or 1 cm grid with "Heavier line every N" turned on gives you clear reference lines to rule against.

What's the difference between square, dot, lined, and isometric graph paper?

Square grid draws a continuous line lattice for math and technical work; dot grid replaces those lines with light dots for journaling and sketching; lined paper keeps only horizontal rules for handwriting; isometric paper uses a triangular 30°/90°/150° lattice for 3D drawing.
